René Cuperus is Senior Research Fellow at the Clingendael Institute, especially linked to the Clingendael China Center. He organised, with Alex Krijger & Partners, the ‘China College Tour’, bringing together Millennials around discussions on China at various Dutch universities. His research, publications and consulting are aimed at China debates and China strategy-building in Europe and the USA.
Before, René Cuperus was ’Scholar in Residence’ at the Strategy Unit of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working on European integration, Globalisation and the Populist Backlash and China-EU/USA relations.
Cuperus is also Research Fellow at the Germany Institute of the University of Amsterdam, writes a political column for Dutch daily newspaper De Volkskrant and contributes a blog to Social Europe Journal, an E-journal linked to the London School of Economics (LSE). He has published on European politics and populism in various international publications. René Cuperus taught at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Groningen (NL). He furthermore gave (guest) lectures at various universities in Germany, Spain, UK, Chile, USA and Belgium.
He is currently member of the board of the Dutch ’Atlantic Commission’ and board member and guide of ‘Nationaal Monument Kamp Amersfoort’, a former Nazi-concentration camp in the Netherlands.
René holds degrees in political and cultural history and cultural anthropology from the Universities of Groningen and Lisbon. He was Director for International Relations at the Wiardi Beckman Foundation, thinktank of the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA).
